Next Steps: Starting My MS in Computer Engineering (Security) at FIU

As I approach graduation from the University of Tampa, I’ve been thinking carefully about the next step in my education and career. After considering several graduate programs, I’ve decided to pursue a Master of Science in Computer Engineering with a concentration in Security at Florida International University.

One of the biggest factors in this decision was flexibility. The FIU program is offered fully online, which allows me to continue working full-time while pursuing graduate education. In cybersecurity, real-world experience is just as important as academic knowledge, so being able to gain both simultaneously was a major advantage.

The program focuses on security from a computer engineering perspective, which complements my cybersecurity background well. Rather than focusing only on policy or high-level security management, the curriculum dives deeper into technical areas such as:

  • Secure systems design
  • Cryptography
  • Computer architecture and hardware security
  • Network and system protection
  • Emerging technologies in cybersecurity

This technical focus aligns closely with the direction I want my career to take. My long-term interests include areas like malware analysis, network defense, and advanced cyber operations.

Another benefit of pursuing a master’s degree is the opportunity to deepen my understanding of how complex systems are designed and secured. Many modern security challenges exist at the intersection of hardware, software, and networking. A computer engineering perspective helps bridge those layers.

Starting this program while working full-time will definitely be challenging, but it also reflects how the cybersecurity field works in practice. Professionals in this space are constantly balancing operational work with continued learning.

I’m excited to begin the program this fall and continue building both my academic knowledge and real-world experience in cybersecurity.
