Cybersecurity is a field where learning never really stops. New threats emerge constantly, technologies evolve, and the skills needed to defend systems have to keep pace. One of the certifications that often marks the starting point for many cybersecurity professionals is CompTIA Security+, and recently I earned it myself.
Security+ is widely recognized as an entry-level cybersecurity certification that covers the fundamentals of protecting systems, networks, and data. The exam tests knowledge across several key areas including:
- Network security
- Threats and vulnerabilities
- Identity and access management
- Cryptography
- Security operations and incident response
- Risk management and governance
Preparing for the exam required a significant amount of study time. I worked through training materials, practice exams, and hands-on exercises to strengthen my understanding of both theoretical concepts and practical security scenarios. One of the things I appreciated about Security+ is that it doesn’t just test memorization. Many questions focus on real-world situations, requiring you to understand how security tools and processes are actually used.
For me, the certification also reinforced concepts that I’ve been studying as a cybersecurity student at the University of Tampa, as well as things I’ve encountered during internships and technical work. Topics like network monitoring, vulnerability management, and incident response were much easier to grasp when I could connect them to real environments.
Earning Security+ represents an important milestone, but it’s really just one step in a much longer journey. Cybersecurity is a field that demands constant learning and adaptation.
I’m already looking ahead to the next certifications and opportunities to continue developing my skills.
